Catheter Problem

by GWY, Sep 22, 2007 03:05PM
What anesthetic should be given for pain before inserting a catheter in your penis?
I underwent a botched attempt at inserting a catheter in my penis with out anesthetic.
After trying to insert it far enough for an Eultradynamic test they pulled it out and tryed another one.
I was in so much pain they finally gave up and said i would have to come back again and do the Ultradynamic test and a Cystoscopy at the same time. I have prostate cancer and they say i have to under go these tests before they can implant the seed to cure the cancer.
I need some advice on what type of anesthetic i should be getting for this test.

I've had a cysto performed every three months for the past few years to check for recurrence of bladder tumors. They always start by inserting lidocaine into the urethra for temporary numbing. As they slide the catheter and/or cystoscope down the urethra, it has to pass over the prostrate. If the prostrate is enlarged, the passage understandably becomes very narrow. An enlarged prostrate could be the problem or there could be some sort of stricture(an abnormal narrowing of the urethra).

I also have a friend who had to undergo a cysto and became so tense at the procedure, the medical staff could not get the scope in. They gave him a valium and were able to do the procedure when he calmed down.

gell lidocaine is always recomended before catheters or cystos. It makes the procedures MUCH easier and more comfortable. When your in pain its next to impossible to relax the mussels and therefore that is why you had such trouble, IMHO...

The best way to administer the gel lidocaine is to put it in a syringe, hold the tip firmly against the opening and inject the lidocaine into the urethra. Pinch the top of the urethra to keep it from coming out and work the lidocaine (press the buldge in the urethra and slide down the shaft, that will make it go lower) into the lower urethra, past the prostate for full numbing.
