BILN-2061

Hi,

I found in a french forum that somebody had asked for a new protocol with BILN-2061 but I can't find information about that.

The latest info was BILN-2061testing  was stopped by Boerhinger Ingelmann due to cardiotoxicity in animal models.

Does somebody have information about this new starting ?

BILN 2061 was a drug that was being developed a few years ago. It was a really effective type of  HCV antiviral drug called a protease inhibitor. Unfortunately BILN 2061 was found to cause heart toxicity problems in primate (monkey) testing, so it was discontinued. No further human testing of BILN 2061 was conducted. The good news is that there are other protease inhibitors that are being tested now, which are about as effective (or even moreso) than BILN 2061 and don't have the heart toxicity problems. Vertex Pharmaceutical's VX-950, or Telaprevir, is the best thing going right now. There are several folks on this forum who have already taken Telaprevir along with interferon and ribavirin and have been cured (including myself). It will probably be FDA approved and out on the market within 1-3 years.
