Prostate Cancer Treatment Options

There's an interesting discussion about prostate cancer going on at CR4: The Engineer's Place for News and Discussion.

My question: Why wouldn't a doctor want to remove a prostate tumor - even if the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes? From what I read at CR4, there's some real resistance to do this.

Hello Sir,

Removal of a prostate tumor alone is not currently accepted treatment regiments when concerning prostate cancer. Currently our best results come from radical prostatectomy if the disease is organ confined. If the disease has spread, radical prostatectomy is not the ideal treatment because there are now multiple foci of disease and it is no longer confined ie you dont actually get rid of the cancer because its already in the lymph nodes. Therefore prostatectomy would allow little help and chemotherapy/brachytherapy or radiation could be the best solution.

Thanks!
