Dear Doctor,

I have a question about listeria. I am 5 weeks pregnant and have recently eaten precooked chicken strips found in the refrigerator at the supermarket deli counter. I discovered later that the chicken strips were expired by one day (packageded on Sept. 24, best before Sept. 27 and eaten for dinner Sept. 28).  We only warmed the chicken, not until steaming hot as our microwave was broken. I am concerned about the possibility of listeriosis as I have since read that pre-cooked chicken is a risky food and we did not heat it until hot. Should I call my doctor or wait until my next visit? How common is listeriosis in pregnancy and how much should I be concerned. I have had 2 previous miscarriages so I am normally very careful. Thank you so much for offering this service.

Hello,

Listeriosis accounts for less than one percent of reported cases of bacterial foodborne infections.
Common symptoms include fever, watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, and pains in joints and muscles.  The typical duration of symptoms is two days or less and recovery is generally complete.

Listerial infection in pregnant women can lead to fetal death, premature birth, or infected newborns.  It most commonly affects women in the third trimester.  In the absence of symptoms, however, no work up is necessary.  If you do begin to experience symptoms (as noted above), blood and stool cultures would be warranted.
