Weight gain after surgery

by Elizabeth37122, Sep 29, 2007 12:53PM
In 2001 I had a total abdominal colectomy (my entire colon was removed). Since that surgery I have gained about 60 lbs and I cannot lose weight. Almost 4 months ago, I joined a gym. I have walked on the ellyptical machine 10 miles a day, 6 days a week, for almost 4 months. I have also worked on the weight machines--not a lot, though. Guess how much weight I've lost....zero, zilch, nada..!! I've been to the doctor and had my thyroid checked. It was fine. Someone please help. I am so depressed and discouraged. Can anyone help me? I am at my wit's end. Thank you.

I had an emergency colectomy last november.  It was an emergency because I had suffered from severe constipation, abdominal and rectal pain and bleeding since I was a toddler, with no diagnosis.  I searched the country over for help. Finally when I got acknowledgement I was told I was facing perforation of my colon and had surgery that morning.  I had previously know I might be facing partial removal of my colon not knowing you could have the whole thing out without the bag and all.  I met a young girl a month prior who told me she had her colon removed.  She was very thin and wearing a white bikini eating a bag of potato chips and drinking a beer on the beach. With quite a walk from the condo bathrooms.  Things you think about with our problems.  After surgery, I lost 25 lbs and maintained that loss for about 3 months.  I eat less and more often which I thought was good.  Two months ago my weight began to climb I am up 30lbs. in 2 months.  Thyroid check fine.  I would love to have someone to talk to about this,.  I feel your pain.  Hang in there, I am trying to!
