ALS or Lyme or both

by woodyrich, Sep 29, 2007 02:19PM
My 38 year old nephew started experiencing upper torso twitching and slurred speech and weakness in 2 fingers on one hand.  2 neurologists and various tests results in neurologist stating 95% probability of ALS.  Six weeks after that an infectious disease doctor diagnosed (with positive western blot) bad case of lyme disease.  When the lyme diagnosis was presented to ALS doctor, the doctor replied "so you have both ALS and Lyme".  After 5 weeks IV ceftriaxone for lyme strength was gained in the fingers.  After going off the IV antibiotic the weakness reoccurred.  He is now recommended to go back on the antibiotics to continue treating the lyme.  What is the likelihood that he has both or is it possible, like some, he has a misdiagnosis and is suffering from chronic lyme (he thinks he contracted 6 years ago)?  He has no pain associated with his symptoms.  Thank you
