COPD and Infections

by Jack615, Oct 01, 2007 03:51PM
I have severe COPD and it seems like everytime I get a cold, I end up in the hospital with severe problems.  Is there anything I can do to minimize the chances of ending up in the hospital??

Several things:  Avoidance of crowds, friends and family with colds during the winter when colds are most highly prevalent.  Also the use of an inhaled steroid along with an inhaled long-acting bronchodilator (Serevent, Spiriva or both).

Pay more careful attention to your respiratory health so that, when you first sense the onset of a cold, the very first signs, you can contact your doctor and arrange to initiate oral steroid and/or antibiotic therapy.

Finally, avoid the agony of Influenza by getting a Flu Shot soon.
