Liver Issues from Vicodin

by hopeimdone, Oct 03, 2007 08:35PM
Hi All. I know many of us on here have taken a pretty large dose of acetaminophen. I have been on and off pills for several years now, but was up to appx 10 for the past 7 months. Have any of you had your liver levels checked? I feel like I need to but I am scared and wondered if anyone had light or experience on really how much can be damaging.

Thanks!

Its better to know, there was a girl here who just recently had to go to the hospital for her liver it was shutting down. so this is nothing to play with and 'hope for the best" about.. I would have that test. because it doesn't take much if you have been using them for a long time.

Always good to know.  The thing about your liver is it can take a lot of abuse before it fails.  And you never know when that is going to be.  Any doctor will do it as part of a complete physical.  There are really no symptoms of liver failure until it is really bad.  Get your levels checked and set your mind at ease.

I'm going tomorrow to have that done.  I too am a little worried about my liver.  I get more worried about the amount of acetaminophen I'm getting in a day than the narcotic!

I go every six months..religiously..to have blood work. Just a CBC..which covers most everything. I am on meds for other illnesses, so it is important that I do this. Thank GOD, after all I have done in my life, that my liver functions..and well.

I suggest you go and have it tested. Put your mind at rest.

Although there are risks with the acetominophen, your liver is quite amazing at revving up the necessary enzymes to metabolize the acetominophen, especially in people who take tylenol on a regular basis. So,get you AST,ALT,Alkaline Phosphatase, total bilirubin and Prothrombin time checked to  be certain that you are not the exception to the rule.

There are many formulations of hydrocodone/APAP. Vicodin is 5/500 (5mgs hydro, and 500 acetaminophen). 4000-5000 mgs of APAP is the upper recommended limit. Norco is 10/325 and the least proportion of APAP readily available in the US. If you take it regularly, see if your doctor will switch you to that combo. Lorcet I believe is 10/650 (still better than 5/500).

Liver function tests are suggested and don't require fasting beforehand. Take a look in the mirror, and if the whites of your eyes are yellow, or your skin has a yellow pallor to it, run, don't walk to your doctor. Liver toxicity is often not noticed until it's too late. Get the tests...

For the record and it was just me, I was at twice that for at least twice as long and my liver function is fine but doesn't hurt to get it checked.  That's why when I was using, I switched to norco because of much less tylenol.
