Lower extremity and facial numbness

by Quahog, Oct 04, 2007 01:47AM
Hello,

I am a 35 year old male who has been having some strange symptoms on and off now for some 4-5 years.   I have been suffering with right hip pain with a burning shooting and stabbing pain that runs from my hip down into my right foot.   It sometimes feels like someone is pouring cold water down my legs.   I am also experiencing low back pain.  I have had X-rays, MRIs and other than some mild arthritis and a bulging disc they were normal.  I was told that the disc was not the cause of this.   I've had EMG/NCV testing which showed a slowing of the right tibial and peroneal nerves.  Subsequent testing has failed to show the same issue.

If that wasn't bad enough I am also dealing with neck pain, shoulder pain, and facial pain.  A recent MRI showed a Central disc herniation at C3-C4 although I am told that this would not cause the symptoms I have been dealing with.

Lately, I have also had my face go numb it feels like a hammer is hitting my cheeks, nose.  My upper teeth are going numb and my vision is slightly affected.  There is also vertigo, dizziness and occasional nausea.  All testing has been normal with the exception of a sinus CT scan which showed thickening of the sinus walls with some minor blockage.    I do have allergies.

I have been tested for just about everything MS,RA,etc. but so far I am no closer to an accurate diagnosis.    There was one MD who thought that I could have Lyme after a positive Western blot but that turned out to be false.

What on earth is causing all this?    Is there something I am missing?  I am in pain most of the time and feel things are becoming worse.   What is the possibility that one thing is causing all this or is it more likely that it is from multiple sources.

I thank you for your time and hope that you can point me in the right direction.

Hi Quuahog,
Are you seeing a good neorologist? You know your body better than the doctor does, so if you believe your symptoms are getting worse, you need to express that to your current doctor or find another one that will listen. Have you had a recent MRI of the brain and spine?

Ask your neurologist about chiari malformation/syrnix...i have it and your symptoms sound too similar to mine. That may not be it,but it wont hurt to ask, right.Especially if your symptoms are getting worse. With chiari, your symptoms will worsen rather quickly
