Constant throat clearing and coughing

by help42, Oct 04, 2007 10:58AM
I have had this constant post nasal drip with the need to clear my throat constantly to clear the mucous out.  It's like it NEVER clears.  It's been over a year now, and it feels like it's getting worse.
The only time I have relief is when I go to sleep at night.  Upon wakening, it begins immediately when I get up.
I've been tested for acid reflux/gerd and don't have either.  I saw an ENT who looked at my sinuses through a light, and said he couldn't see anything but redness in my throat from the constant throat clearing.  He told me to come back for a scan of my sinuses if my acid reflux test was negative.
Anyone have this same problem?

I have the same problem. Feels fine at night and keeps getting worse throughout the day.

I have tried medication for GERD- nasal steroid and Allegra- so far nothing works. I also tried the saline nasal rinse and and my ears got clogged. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day, tried apple cider vinegar and again no relief.

Seems to feel slightly better if I keep my head down or way up.

Have been to ENT and Internist. Have an appointment next month with GI. Getting desperate.

i have had this thick sticky white mucus in my throat for over one year.  i constantly go to doctor.  i have been to ent, gastro doctor, allergy doctor. have been tested for allergies though none were found.  been giving every type of medicine you can think of nothing works.  i live in hawaii.  have been here since 2005 this statred in feburary 2006 and i still have it. most doctors that i go to say they dont know of any else who has this.  i constantly chew gum (trident gum).  i  go to sleep chewing gum i buy and chew so much gumi should be doing i trident commercial.  the gum chewing helps me out alot gets my mind off of it, but the problem is still there.  i can not go on this way for the rest of my life. i have trouble swallowing my salvia when the mucus is there i can not swallow my salvia so i have to constanly clear my throat and no soon then i clear it the mucus is right back.  i have acid reflux so i take nexum two  times a day. gi doctor said it was from the acid reflux but i really do not believe him. have been taking nexum for one year and no difference in the mucus.  last year when it started it made me depressed because i did not know what was happening to me.  there has to be some kind of doctor out here that knows what is going on.  i wish that i can find him or her and be cured.  the mucus lots of times makes me vomit so i have to take medicine for that.  any one with anything that helps please response.

how is your diet? I too have acid reflux, and have controlled my throat clearing. do not eat chocolate, or any suguary foods. do not eat citrus,  tomato, or carbonated beverages. no alcohol. only eat low fat, low carb meals. no spicy meals.no red peppers. no juice drinks. only use low fat or nonfat salad dressing.. eat 5 small meals a day rather than 3 big ones. this keeps your stomach acid from building pressure against your LES.see this website below. it has three pages of foods you can and cannot eat. although it is for heartburn sufferers, the same rules apply to acid reflux. i snack on no sugur animal crackers and low salt saltines.
