Surgical intervention

by Emily77, Oct 05, 2007 12:05PM
Recently, a friend was diagnosed with Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Urethra.  The recommended surgery was removal of the penis, urethra, prostate, pelvic lymph nodes and bladder.  I understand this is a rare and dangerous cancer, however, the surgery seems quite radical.  Is there anyway to assess the surrounding areas for cancer without total removal and if so is it a recommeded and effective treatment?  We know it is vital to get as much information as possible on the progression of the disease and to have a thorough pathology report we are just looking for a less redical way to go about it if at all possible.

Thank you,
Emily

this is serous business.. I had TC and i cant imagine looking my primary organs.. I would think i would consult several doctors and see how far progressed this is and if organ sparing can be done. On the prostate the urethra tract can be removed easily with nerve sparing procedure, the bladder can be replaced with a neo-bladder, but the penis is th hardest from both a psycological stand point and a surgery stand point. The urethra can be removed from it in a micro-surgical nerve sparing procedure, it is vital the nerve that runs along the urethra be intact. A new urethral opening can be made in the prenium area, and with the urethra removed from the penis it will seal shut and close up internally, but he will still have one. This is something your going to have to do some calling around and find a really talented doctor, perhaps at a local medical school..
