thyroid & diabetes

73 yr old female- thymus irradiation at 2-3 weeks age. History of near hemorage menstration( 7-8 days), anemia; depression after the birth of first child (at age 21) and two others. U or Pa evaluation  in the 70's ,put on snynthoid "for life"  GP took me off the meds.GYN (also an ndrocrinolgist) prescribed (.125) for several years (no longer practicing)

I've been under extreme stress this year, experiencing excessive  hair loss.  GP's did blood work.  TSH test indicated Thyroid normal but diagnosed me as diabetic with high blood pressure, prescribed diabetes HP meds .  I am already on Prilosec for gastro problems, Relafen for arthritis, Actonel for oseto, and Vytorin for  Cholesterol, I really didn't want to start  2 new meds.  I am trying to follow a diabetic diet and have lost about 10-12 lbs, I'm testing Sugar (121-140) and BP (125-130 over 72-80) However, when I have carbs  it averages 160-169 range, I'm not taking pills. .

1. Can undertreatment for  hypothroidism lead to or contribute to diabetes?
2.  I can't eat lettuce, onions, citris, tomatoes and some things  allowed on diabetic diet
. If I take the pills will that make it possible for me to eat some carbs, which has been my primary
food  source for several years, because pasta etc  doesn't get my bowels in an uproar like
spices, and the above foord that are allowed on diabetic diet.
3.  Is below 100 sugar necessary? Is 120-140 going to damage eyes and  organs?

Thank you

Hi,
I see your concern being placed on more medication, but it may be necessary to keep you healthy in the long run. Your questions:
1)regarding undertreatment of thyroid disorders: this could contribute to abnormal blood sugars if you are frankly under-replaced, but a slight underdosing should not affect glucose problems significantly.
2)The right dose and selection of diabetes medication will make it possible for you to have some carbohydrates without too much blood sugar rise. You should try to limit your simple sugar carbohydrates in any case and try to stick with high fiber complex types like whole wheat bread/pasta and beans.
3)You do not need to have blood sugars below 100 to be kept healthy. A fasting sugar below 100 is fantastic but under 120 is also very good.  Sugars in the range of 120-140 are not perfect but over time will not likely cause significant damage to eyes and organs . Those blood sugars correspond to a HgbA1C of 6-6.7% or therabouts, which is the current goal of treatment to avoid complications.
Keep up with your diet, try to add exercise as tolerated and talk to your doctor about medication choices. Good luck!
