herpes whitlow vs herpes

by junebug008, Oct 09, 2007 05:06PM
Dr Please advise,

About 2 weeks ago, I noticed a small blister near the nailbed of my 3rd finger.  It got worse over the week and I proceeded to seek medical treatment.  The blister was drained and I was given cephalexin, the MD thought it might be pyogenic granuloma but no certain diagnosis.

I may have touched myself in the genital area around the same time that this was noticed.  I have since developed two small (2mm diameter) yellowish white bumps on the same finger.  Seeing an Emerg Doc again a week later (i.e. 1 week after it was drained) because I got a rash from the cephalexin, she looked at these two bumps and had a thought that it might be herpetic whitlow.  I have worked in a hospital for the past 6 years, but not really in direct patient contact.  Having said that, I do touch charts, MARs, surfaces all day long.  I'm told that that is a risk factor.

My question is... if this IS herpetic whitlow, could I now have given myself genital herpes????  (The blisters were not open when I touched myself.)  Or could my finger infection have come from an underlying genital herpes infection??? I am panicking.  I do not think I have genital herpes -- my partner nor I have never had any symptoms of herpes; I have been in a monogamous relationship for 3 years.

If this isn't herpetic whitlow, then I'm not too worried about a mild cellulitis-type infection....
The MD took a swab and will let me know and in the meantime, I was prescribed Clindamycin.

Please - any advice or experience would be much appreciated.
