Hypothyroid diet suggestions

by tornadochaser, Oct 10, 2007 12:15PM
I have symptoms of underactive thyroid.  Despite diet (1300 or less calories a day) and exercise (30 min. treadmill morning speed-walking and chasing 3 children all day), I cannot lose weight (5'7", 167lbs).  My doctor and I are getting more labs to decide a course of treatment.  My question to you is:  Are there certain foods or vitamins/minerals that boost thyroid function and promote weight loss?  Any particular diet I could follow as opposed to medicine or to compliment the efforts of medication should my doctor decide to go that route?  I am desperate for a solution--I hate feeling this way and my children deserve a less irritable/anxious Mommy.  I thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Hypothyroid disease slows down our metabolism and it does become difficult to loss weight. It is good that your MD did blood work on your thyroid hormone levels and is evaluating the proper medication (to regulate the thyroid). Research has indicated that the combination of thyroid medication, healthy eating and exercise will result in weight loss. An exercise program could be walking for ½ hour, 4-5 times a week, which you are doing already. Healthy eating habits include all the food groups, including high fiber Carbohydrates, with moderate portions. Best of luck and thank you for your question.
