Peculiar Knee Pain

by Julietta, Oct 10, 2007 01:57PM
I have been searching extensively and can't find any information on this.

When I kneel on a hard surface, I feel like I'm kneeling on a tack or pebble. More specifically, it is as if there is a sharp object under the skin. There is a very sharp, very localized non-burning pain just at the outside edge of the mid-point of the knee cap. If I put my weight on the inner part of the kneecap, I can avoid the pain, but if I kneel on the outside of the knee, the pain gets intense. Until a few days ago, I had no  other symptoms whatsoever, even when running (I do a total of about 12 miles a week). Now I'm experiencing a modest amount of pain while running or walking, but it is not on the outside of the knee; it's where the femur and shin bone connect at the knee. It is not a deep pain as if it's deep in the joint itself.

I should add that pressing on the knee does not cause any pain; nor does  rotating, extending, or flexing the knee. I'd like to treat this at home if at all possible.

Thanks much for any advice you can give me!
