How often do pediatricians order bone density tests for children with a history of multiple fractures? My 12 year old grandson was finally tested after six fractures.  His hand broke off his arm (both bones completely broken) when he was tackled from behind playing football. His Mom took him for a checkup the following year before play began and asked the pediatrician (who had cared for him since birth) if she thought something could be causing so many fractures. He was a very healthy strong boy with a perfect diet and lots of exercise, little TV or video games. He could have been paralyzed or had his skull crushed easily if he had continued to play contact sports. After a year of IV paliminate therapy for 3 days every 3 months, he has shown some improvement. He broke his index finger and wrist yesterday playing "touch football", when he was once again tackled from the back. I think my daughter should not allow him to play touch football and that she should take him to a physical therapist who can show him what exercises will help keep his back strong. He is very thin now and seems to stoop. His pediatrician always said he could drink 2% milk as he ate a healthy diet and he did not need vitamins. Now I think children should dring whole milk and be given vitamins.
