eyelid mole

I have recently gone to the dermatologist for a six months skin cancer screenig.  I have had several moles excised because they were basal cell carcinomas from my arm and one on my face.  I have had a clear round mole looking growth on my eyelid.  I asked the dermatologist if it was just an eyelash under the skin or a mole that I should be concerned about.  She said I needed to see an opthomologist to have a look at it.  Do you think this is something that I should be concerned about and why couldn't the dermatologist give me some insight into what it is?

I'm sure  your dermatologist is doing a great job.  When it comes to the eyelids, the lower eyelid is an extremely common site for basas cell carcinoma (possible the number 1 or 2 most common site.)  I see them all the time.  Basically, you need an ophthalmologist to look at the lesion with the slit lamp and if it looks suspicious, he can perform a biopsy and excision if needed.  If it is a significant lesion - you may need a oculo-plastic surgeon.  Dermatologist don't usually work on the eyelids.  I think it's important to get it checked out by an ophthalmologist.
