PPIs, H. Pylori, etc.

I've been having serious nausea and some pain, though no lower GI disorders (i.e. diarrhea), for almost three weeks now. After a few "warning signs" over the preceding two weeks, it started in earnest, and I went to see a doctor who gave me Protonix, which was very helpful. Since I've been off the Protonix, my stomach problems are returning.

So...
1. Is it safe to start Prilosec right away?
2. Are these symptoms indicative of H. Pylori infection (I'm seeing a GI specialist, but the first appointment I could get was a while from now, so I thought to ask here).

Ask to get a blood test for the H.Pylori. It can take a couple of weeks to get the results back so I'd do it as soon as possible, before you see your GI, that way he can go over the results with you. Call him up and ask him if he could send you to the lab for blood work. While you're at it you can ask for testing for Crohns and Celiac Disease too. All of that can be found out through a blood test. Good luck to you!
