Pregnancy problems

by downhomecc, Oct 14, 2007 11:02AM
I had my last period on 9-11 which was a normal period.  Around the time I should have started my period this month I had a pink discharge that went from pink to brown and back to pink.  This has been going on for 6 days now.  I took three home pregnancy tests all were positive.  I made a Doctor appointment and went to it their test was positive as well.  During my pelvic exam the doctor found a mass on the right side so he immediatly sent me for vaginal ultrasound which showed what looked to be an ovarian cyst that had bled into itself.  I go back this week for another hcg level test.  They were unable to see a sac or anything because I am only approx.4 weeks pregnant.  Is there anything to worry about, is this normal?  What are the chances this pregnancy will survive?  What could be causing this discharge?

Hello,

The discharge probably is implantation bleeding or a small sub-chorionic hematoma.  Both are very common and are not predictive of a miscarriage.  Everything you've described is normal thus far.  The ovarian cyst is likely a corpus luteum (normal finding), but you'd have to ask your physician his or her thoughts on that based on the ultrasound read.

Your risk of miscarriage is mostly based on your age and prior history.  For now, I'd encourage you to be patient.  You'll learn tons more in the upcoming weeks.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
