PLACENTAL ABRPTION

by JOYWAWER, Oct 15, 2007 05:13AM
I lost my daughter at 25 weeks to placental abruption in june of 2007. Does anybody know of anything that i can do to maximize my chances of carrying my next child to term? No known causes were found.

Thanks.

I had something similar happen. My placenta lifted off of the uterine wall at 12wks. I was told it was from overdoing it. Their best guess was I lifted something too heavy. Next time I won't lift anything at all. I am sorry for your devastating loss. It is so hard to go through.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's devastating, I know.  Has your doctor recommended maybe bedrest for your next pregnancy?

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was induced with cytotech (spelling?) at 39 weeks and also had placental abruption. it ended up emergency csection and after a couple days in special care my son was ok. I was told even though the chances of it happening again are a little higher once you've had one they're still not real high. we'll never know if it was the cytotech or what but I did have high blood pressure too and I've read that can be a contributing factor. If I get pregnant again (now we are having trouble with m/c for some reason)  I will see an actual ob dr. instead of just a family prac. dr. but as far as they have told me there really isn't much to do to prevent it...just to watch for signs of it. It is so scary to go through, I've never seen so much blood. Again, I'm sorry for your loss

Thank you all that responded to my question. My husband and I are still trying to concieve (I didnt think it would be that hard...). My last OB advised me to get a high risk ob on my next pregnancy. since we lost our daughter I have been looking for something or someone to blame just to make me feel better. I sometimes think stress might have had something to do with it, I was in the process of finishing my 4yr degree in nursing and getting ready to take the national exam, two days after i found out that i had passed my daughter died! My life has never been the same.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I just recently went through a similar situation.  I lost my daughter to a partial placental abruption at 21 weeks in December.  I just recently met with the High risk OB and she ran some blood tests to see if I had any "Thrombophilias."  Essentially, because of the abruption, she wanted to look to see if I was having any clotting problems.  It turned out that I do have a condition that can cause too much clotting when my hormone levels are elevated.  She can't state with 100% certainty that that is what caused the abruption, but she is treating me as such, and I am now taking a baby asprin and 4mg of folic acid a day. That is the therapy for my specific problem.  You may want to consult with your perinatologist and see if he/she can order blood tests to see if you have anything else going on.  As I have since learned, there are "some things" they can do to decrease the risk of another abruption.  I'm still scared to try again, but I feel a whole lot better knowing that I have that portion of this under control.  Best of luck to you and your husband.
