Work life group policy - canceled me

by fjhepburn, Oct 16, 2007 03:30PM
My work group term life insurance policy for 60K was cancelled by the insurer.  This happened two weeks after I was diagnosed with heart failure, last March 2007.  I had this policy for 25 years.

However, I went on disability a few years ago for another reason, Meniere's disease, an inner ear disorder.  Since I was out on disability, the insurance company and my employer have an arrangement where the monthly premiums are waived for me.  The insurance company sent my 'waiver' case to a doctor in the Midwest, and I live in Connecticut.  This doctor, who I never saw or heard from,  determined I had no real disability.  Lastly, the insurance company say they contacted my inner ear doctor for this evaluation, but he says that they did not.

I've called several lawyers, none would help me, not even my lawyer acquaintences.  My employer refuses to get involved.  Any suggestions?

Some new info:  I've learned that there may be some 'bad blood' between that insurance company & my employer.  Last year my employer has stopped using them & switched to another life insurance company.  My employer says that they will honor my policy, even though they are an electric utility. I hope that should be OK.

I can't remember who licenses insurance companies, but I think you should consider contacting them and filing a complaint.

Thank you for your comment. I went through an appeals process, where my cardiologist sent a letter, stating that I cannot return to work due to heart failure.  My appeal was denied.  I think the original group policy was owned by my employer, who doesn't want to get involved.  Since I'm on disability with a heart problem now, I cannot get onto my employer's new group policy.  I'd like to file a complaint with the Connecticut insurance commission, but I'm not the policy owner.
