MTHFR and Pregnancy

by murfirhea, Oct 16, 2007 09:43PM
I  have had 3 miscarriages in the last year. I tested positive for compund heterozygous MTHFR. My homocysteine levels came back normal. Could MTHFR still be causing me to lose my babies even if the homocysteine is normal? I have started taking 1mg of folic acid, and B6 &B12. I have also been taking baby aspirin. Any thoughts? Anyone experience the same thing?  MY dad  had normal homocysteine levels and died from what we believe was a clot to the heart.  He had no congenital defect and or heart disease.  He was 37.  So I'm freakin a bit.  Any help is appreciated!

Hi, I'm sorry for your losses, I have lost 2 myself.  After my 2nd m/c I tested positive for MTHFR and Factor V Leiden clotting disorders.  I THINK (I'm no expert) that the clotting issues (especially with 2 copies of the gene) can cause m/c. Are you taking a special folic acid like Metanx or just OTC stuff?  My OB put me on Metanx because it is a specially metabolized form of folic acid which my body has trouble using properly.  I know this comment is late, but I just recently joined medhelp and my dx was just in April, so I'm new to all this.
