Diaper rash for months?

by newbie2b, Oct 17, 2007 01:08PM
Hi all.. My daughter has a red tush and red vulva.  She's had this for months now.  But it doesnt seem to bother her at all. When we went to the dr, she perscibed a cream called  nystatin and told me to use it for about two week. Well, we've used the whole tube for about 3 weeks straight and nothing.  Still red. Before the dr, we tried Balmex, A & D and pretty much used the whole tubes of those on her as well.  We even tried a Balmex that was suppose to reduce redness. Nothing.  What should I do?  Should I call her dr? I really and trully dont belive it bothers her in the lease. I read somewhere on here that I should try Buttpaste?  But is that stronger than perscription?  I dont know what to do.

my daughter had thrush (yeast infection in her mouth), and thats what they prescribed for her--it didnt work!  i ended up using an old home remedy of baking soda water, and it was gone in 3 days

Hi.  I think I responded to your post about reflux in another forum. Anyway, How much baking soda and water did you use? Just enough to make a paste?  I'm desperate, I'll try anything.

Have you changed wipes, soaps, and diapers? Sounds like that is the culprit. If it were yeast it would have shown improvement within the first application of nystatin.

Go perfume free everything: wipes, baby wash, diapers, and clean with baking soda and water solution. See what happens.

I am a firm believer in using everything unsented "down there" for myself and now for my daughter.  but it seems that the papmers and even the "sensitive" wipes are sented.  As far as changing of the wipes, I go back and forth, but for the first few months of her life (she's 5 months now) I used the pamper sensitive.  So basically, she already had the redness when we changed wipes.  Pampers, same deal, I ran out and had to buy a different brand this weekend, but, again, it's been there for a while now.  Baby wash is the same. But I'll try the baking soda and see if it helps. Thanks :)

i dont know how well itll work because its in a different spot, but i took 1 tsp baking soda to one full glass of water and then used a qtip to wipe her mouth and tongue--i didnt really think it would do anything because it didnt sound like much, but after 2 weeks of the medicine, i was willing to try anything!! and i think i did talk to you in another forum, i hate pitocin, and im trying to let everyone know why--from reading way too much about it, i cant believe they use it in the us, theyve banned it in countries because of all the problems!!!!

thats a sin - I wonder why?  Did the doctor say what may cause it?  I use aquaphor wash on Eva and she does good with that - she has eczema so everything else breaks her out.

i love everything aveeno. have you tried any of thier products? my son had what i thought was a diaper rash, but turned out to be eczema. the dr. ended prescribing 2% hydrocortizone cream for that but said that whether it was rash, eczema or something else, they always reccomend all aveeno products for baby. i think they even make a rash/redness cream that you could use in conjunction with the wash.

I have been fighting a rash for months. I have tried everything including changing kinds of diapers. I finally changed wipes even though I was using an unscented kind and her bottom cleared right up. I think it has been the wipes I have been using.

I'll try it all! Thanks :)

I'm not sure what other kind of wipes I can find. Maybe something in a specialty store.  But I just want it to go away.

hi dd had a similar problem a few weeks ago. i started using a wet warm wash cloth every time i change her and no more rash. hope this helps

by AnnieBrooke, Oct 17, 2007 04:35PM
Try the wet warm washcloth approach, without a pre-moistened wipe.  I have used Vagisil on my son's diaper rash and it really cleared up fast.  The last resort was an over the counter hydrocortisone cream like CortAid, but I have mostly only ever had to use the Vagisil.  His little butt goes from red to healthy pink in about one day.

My son had a horrible diaper rash for weeks too.  The stuff his pediatrician recommended never worked, and we too tried every cream available (Desitin, A&D, Butt Paste, etc.)  What worked- and still works to prevent it- for us was 100% natural pure Emu Oil.  We get it from the local health store, and it comes in a little squirt-type bottle.  It's free of all perfumes and petrolium oil (what some of the other diaper rash ointments on the markets have in them), and is gentle on the skin. I was told not to use baking soda as it is a little harsh/drying, btw.  Anyway, if you Google Emu Oil, you'll see that there's been several studies showing it's natural healing of severe diaper rash.

I agree with Andi though, with as sensitive as your baby's bum sounds, any perfumes/dyes (even in the laundry detergent) won't help with healing.

Good luck!

I agree with going the old fashioned way and using the warm washcloth, and nothing more.

This is going to sound wierd, but Milk of Magnesia on a cottonball will usually clear it up quickly. I have used it on my kids when they were teething and get the acidy diarrhea/rash. It worked for them. Good luck to you.

I'm in the Vagisil group... that stuff works wonders and heals things up quickly.
