Question from Physical Therapist...re: Carotid/Vertebral Artery Dissection?

by bsptpc, Oct 17, 2007 04:11PM
I am a physical therapist in the Dallas area.  I recently evaluated a patient that had the following episode in 2002: Performing leg press with personal trainer...trainer adds large amount of weight..she extends her knees and immediately feels "pop" in back of neck.  Realizes something is wrong...attempts to stand...loses consciousness....comes to quickly and awakens with intractable head and neck pain.

She continues to have intractable head and neck pain.  Symptoms also include: inability to sleep ("it's like my brain becomes wired"), intolerance to light, poor organizational thought (used to be interior designer, now cannot sequence) etc..etc...

Extensive work ups by neurologists, orthos and rheumatologists over past 5 years include:  MRI:  Cervical, Brain.  EMG bilateral upper extremities.

At this point, she has been issued the dreaded "F" diagnois (fibromyalgia).

My theory is that she has some type of infarct related to traction of the spinal cord/brainstem/brain .....similar to Sharon Stone's case.  The mechanism of injury is the same.

Does anyone here have any thoughts or experience with a similar case(s).

Thank you in advance.

Chris
