Accutane/scar

by jigga2181, Oct 18, 2007 05:55PM
Hey There...couple concerns I have right now...My current dermatologist has me on low dose accutane treatment because I have very persistent acne...so I take 20mg twice a week to keep oil production down..I have taken accutane twice...it only clears me up when I'm on it...so far I have been on 20mg for a month and I breakout mildly here and there...for the most part I'm happy..I do get my blood checked monthly and everything is ok...but here is where my problem comes...to make it short I got into a car accident recently...no one was seriously hurt..but I did get an awful cut below my cheek...it required stiches and I just recently got the stiches out..the scar didn't look that  good...all I keep reading about is how accutane can cause wound healing to be delayed and everything? Any help would be great...I just want to get an outside opinion and see if you think my low dose treament is ok while I try to heal up this wound..and do we know why accutane causes wounds to heal slower? Last...how long should I apply neo-sporin onto the stiched area? Do I eventually want it to dry out? FYI..the scar is somewhat small...I can see the line but its kinda dark around it making it look like a zit or something..will this dark area eventually fade? THANKS MUCH

While it's true that Accutane can impair would healing to some extent, it doesn't stop the body from healing at all.  Also, stopping it at this point wouldn't make much difference, if any, in the way your wound will heal, since wound healing may be affected for several months after stopping it.  So I think you should just have the stitches taken out at the usual time.

Take care.
