Aspergers? Sensory integration?

by mamachic1170, Oct 19, 2007 12:46AM
My son is almost 4.  He had Apraxia of speech and still has motor planning issues.  Does not ride a bike, just started jumping, immature grasp, etc.  These things all just seem delayed.  This is his second year of preschool and he is having trouble socially.  These same things were evident last year but we attributed it to his lack of speech.  (last year he was 5th percentile in speech and this year in the 95th)  he simply does not interract with the other kids at school.  He will watch what they are doing but never join in.  He participates when the whole class is doing something, (ie raising their hands, clapping, etc) but never speaks to another child or approaches them.  He stands around a lot watching, like he just doesn't know what to do.  The teachers help him start projects, make transitions, etc.  Should I be worried or is this something he will grow out of?  He is very smart and has an amazing attention span.  He loves puzzles and anything he can do one on one with an adult.  Thanks.

What do you mean Apraxia of speech and then going from 5th percentile to 95th percentile in one year?  I am wondering if your son is not suffering from apraxia but instead another disorder.  My nephew suffers from apraxia and there is no way he could go from not speaking to speaking well within one year.   Please give more information so we can better help you.  One more question - you said your son "never speaks to another child or approaches them" - please comment on this as well.

I agree with mama - maybe that diagnosis of apraxia should be revisited?     Sounds more like delayed speech?

How does he do if you have one child at your home?  Does he interact then?  Some kids really are not good at dealing socially with groups,  and so they hang out on the periphery,  but do great with one or two kids.
