MRI Results

by Guerrette, Oct 19, 2007 01:38AM
Hello Everyone: I am a 45 and have very dense breast tissue and for several years have had tons of fibrocystic breast lumps. So, every year I do my annual routine of getting a Mammogran which immediately turns into a recommendation to do an Ultrasound. Once the Ultrasound is over, that is the last I hear about it until the next year when we rinse and repeat so to speak :)

Well, this year same drill except when I walked into my door from my Ultrasound appt. to the phone ringing saying they found a complex cyst in my (L) breast and they scheduled me for a bi-lat Contrast breast MRI.

Went this week and got the MRI done. Was simple and no complications to the contrast dye. Today I called the Imaging place and they said my results were in. They sent them to my Dr., but I guess she hasn't gotten them on her desk yet. So, I ran down and picked up a copy of the report myself and a disc.

I sat in the waiting room and read the results which comfirmed what was seen both on the Mammogram and Ultrasound. The Radiologist's findings were really no more than I did after the 1st 2 imaging tests. That is an Atypical Cyst in my (L) upper outter quadrant aneriorily in it's signal characteristics, but no abnormal enhancement and has a "fairly" benign-appearing countour. Though it did not have the normal high signal intensity and remained grey, equal to the non contrast pictures except on the most delayed post contrast images, it did show a slight diffuse enhancement while the other cysts showed decreased signal.

The final impression by the Radiologist was "Probably Benign' and to follow up in short term interval.

So, my question I pose to all of those who have gone before me. If it were you with this report, go ahead and wait and see or would you feel that this warrants them to either do a FNA, Core biopsy or just go ahead and have them remove it and send it to the lab?

I am not one to ignore my health, but I am not a person who tries and over drama's it either. My thoughts is to push and have them just take it out and see which I feel is the only way to be sure. Maybe they just caught it at such a fetus stage that is why it is atypical, but does not show all the characteristics as a more advance cyst would look like.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated by anyone who has had a similar experience. Thanks a million for any thoughts and help.

Sincerely,

Tonie

Get a biopsy.  Do not wait another year with their "guess" that it is benign.

I would want it out...biopsied at the very least.  "fairly"   "probably" would not be good enough for me.

Thanks for the advice. I had a call into my doctor and had faxed over the report I got to her. I have to laugh a little because I waited all day and she never called me back. I was kind of pissy about it. LOL

But, when I got home last night there was a message on my home phone from a speciality breast clinic to call about an appt. It was too late in the day to call back to find out exactly what is going on. I guess my Doctor took matters into her own hands and didn't wait to see how I felt or discuss it with me and went and made the decision for me "which cracks me up" God Bless her she always has my back to set up a surgical consult. I have saline implants and I am sure the VA Surgery doctors are not as skilled in biopsies of the breast let alone with implants in them as well, so I am sure that is why I am getting a call from a specialist who deals with this exact type of case.

So, I will find out on Monday for sure if this is what it is all about.

I was wondering though with all the reading on this site as well as other Cancer information websites, but the FNA and Core Biospys can lead to a lot of "False Negatives and the most realiable results lay in taking the lump out and having them pathology the whole thing. So, I
suppose that is what I will discuss at the surgery consult. I guess like everyone says, it's better to be safe than sorry. It's only a little incision and scare, which would totally out trump a more damaging surgery later on if it were not caught in time. :)

Everyone agree???? :)
