Acute Uticaria - Hives

How do you treat an extreme case of hives (large, covers entire body) when antihisamines (benadryl, etc.) and prednisone don't have any effect?  2 trips to emergency and two trips to the family doctor have provided zero relief.  Help please!!!

Dr. suggests this is a delayed reaction to amoxicillin.  Onset occured 3 days after amoxillin finished.

Hi,

'Urticarias can be very difficult to treat. There are no guaranteed treatments or means of controlling attacks, and some sub-populations are treatment resistant, with medications spontaneously losing their effectiveness and requiring new medications to control attacks. It can be difficult to determine appropriate medications since some such as loratadine require a day or two to build up to effective levels, and since the condition is intermittent and outbreaks typically clear up without any treatment.

Most treatment plans for urticaria involve being aware of one's triggers, but this can be difficult since there are several different forms of urticaria and people often exhibit more than one type. '

You could take some oral antihistamine or antiallergic medications like loratadine or cetrizine and see if it helps with your symptoms. Apply calamine lotion at the site of the lesions to help soothe the itching.

Have you had allergic reactions in the past? Are you allergic to any specific substances?

You could read more about the condition at the following link -
