Doesn't make sense!

by MeganW, Oct 20, 2007 08:00AM
Our daughter has many acute medical issues. We have primary insurance coverage from her father's job, and Florida Medicaid as a secondary insurance due to her disability. We are finding it impossible to have preventative measures approved (for example, occipital molding bands for her positional plagiocephaly). The bands would cost approx. $4,000.00

If the bands are not used, then surgery is usually needed. The surgery costs $65,000.00 It would obviously be more financially sound for the insurance to cover the preventative measures, but they refuse. How does this make any sense?

Have you appealed this?  Often the first response by an insurance company is to deny, deny, deny.  If you appeal, laying out the obvious financial benefit to the insurance company, they may then approve the bands.

Don't call it "preventative" therapy, though.  Just state that the doctor recommends (and get a statement from the doctor) occipital molding bands as the treatment for positional plagiocephaly.  I'm assuming this is a mainstream therapy treatment measure.

Yeah it seems like this companies like to deny almost anything they can. Appeal it ASAP...
