Vision problems

My 16 year old son began complaining of vision problems a few days ago. Basically when he looks at something in the distance he sees a bright light which he describes as similar to what you see when you look into a flash bulb and then look away. He says if he moves his head around he can see around it. He doesnt seem to have the problem when he is looking at something close up. I have made an appointment with the optician- we are in England - but wondered if anybody has any ideas.
