I recently had a screening mammogram which showed some changes in the left breast. "There is an apparent new 8mm nodular opacity located within the prepectoral region. A new nodular 5 mm asymmetric density projects over the pectoralis muscle within the superior aspect of the left breast on the oblique view but has not been included on the cranial caudal view".
I also had an ultrasound which showed no discrete solid or cystic left breast lesions.
I have bilateral breast density of greater than 75%.
I am booked for diagnostic mammogram in two weeks for more views.
I am very concerned. Can you offer an opinion?

The finding of a nodular density on mammogram refers to fibrocystic changes that are usually benign. The nodular density finding itself is not a risk factor for breast cancer; many women have these changes. Nodular density can make the mammogram more difficult for physicians to read and interpret.So if the diagnostic mamogram is not very clear your physician might suggest a MRI. Also discuss the need for a biopsy with your physician. Apart from that no intervention is required as of now. Continue with your regular breast self exams and then get a clinical evaluation every 6 months and a repeat mammogram and USG at 1 year. Goodluck.
Mammogram reported as a nodular opacity of 8mm is usually considered as benign condition. Breast density is usually high in young females and decreases by 35 yrs of age. This is the reason for suggesting the screening mammogram usually in thirties.
It probably can be a case of fibroadenosis.
You can have a regular follow up with your physician apart from your regular self breast examination.
