Effects of Adderall

by mikey1199, Oct 23, 2007 02:32PM
My girlfriend has been diagnosed with Mitral Valve prolapse, a heart murmur, and a papiltating heartbeat.  She is prescribed a beta blocker and Klonopin to help control her heart beat.  She has gone behind her cardiologists back and is seeing a psychologist to get a prescription for Adderall.  When I asked she said her heart doctor would "rip her a new one" if she knew she was on the adderall.  She does not have a healthy diet, maybe one square meal per day.  Do I need to be overly concerned about this?  Any advice is appreciated.  B

prescription for someone who doesn't need it is a dangerous thing.

It is very important that your g/f's doctors are aware of all of the medications she is taking.  I can't speak specifically to Adderall, but I imagine your g/f already knows it is a problem.  I would be concerned since she is deliberately "going behind her cardiologist's back" ....to get a prescription for Adderall, a central nervous system stimulant.  Talk to your g/f about the importance of keeping her doctor's informed as to her medications.

she doesn't have an eating disorder, when you take adderall you don't eat. As far as her heart problems are concerned when you have a condition like mvp and are taking beta blockers you shouldn't mix that prescription with adderall (or any stimulant in that matter). But to mix those three (addy's, beta blockers, and Klonopin) she is nuts! I take adderall, I abuse it at times, and I have a mitral valve problem, I tend to have slight panic attacks at times but I know it's all in my head. If she is having attacks like that she should probably be concerned, only because some of the palpitations may be more then in her head and an adverse effect of her meds. If she feels that she needs to be on the addy's head down to the heart doc and get off the beta blockers immediately. But she doesn't have an eating disorder, perhaps an upper addiction (check her script bet she takes more then shes supposed too).

I took adderall for about 1-2 years and the drug lexapro.  I have mitrol valve prolapse as well.  She needs to stop taking the adderall immediately.  The drug puts a lot of pressure on your heart.  I can't stress to you how strongly I feel that she stops taking it now.  I feel that my heart problems are a direct result of adderall.
