Thyroid scan results, any advice?

by MVanS, Oct 24, 2007 02:11PM
My PCP sent me for a thyroid ultrasound due to fatigue, weight gain, hoarseness and constant throat clearing.  My labs results have pretty consistently come up within normal limits.
My u/s results were:
1) The right gland is within normal limits, measuring 3.9x2.0x1.5 cm.  IN the midpole there is a 5mm hypoechoic solid nodular lesion noted.  No other focus is noted.
2)  The isthmus measures some 6mm in greatest diameter.  No definite nodule is noted.
3)  The left lobe is within normal limits in size, measuring 4.1x2.1x1.5 cm.  In the upper pole there is an 8mm x 7mm solid appearing heterogeneous nodule noted.  NO other focal lesion is identified.
IMPRESSION:
1)Bilateral solid nodules as described above.  Findings are non-specific.  The may simply represent adenomata, however, the possibility of a neoplastic process cannot be excluded.  Recommend close ultrasound follow up.
2)  No evidence of thyromegaly

Does anyone know what this means?  Is this likely cancer or likely not?  Has anyone had a similar result or experience?  Any advice is so appreciated.  I'm at a loss.

It says that they can't say for sure if it's cancer or not from the ultrasound....it can't be excluded. Just try to remember that 95% of thyroid nodules are noncancerous.
