Neck pain

by Nutbar, Oct 24, 2007 06:32PM
I am 46 YO female, I am 4 years post a rear end car collision, pick up hit me travelling 50 to 60 km per hour, I was stopped waiting to make a left hand turn...I have had persistent low back and neck pain, neck being most severe, have had many sessions of physio, massage, acupuncture, chronic pain management program, Canadian Back Institute...Recently had an MRI, would appreciate any clarification or understanding:

MRI C Spine, multiplanar, multisequence imaging obtained through C spine.  Findings:  C3-4, small posterior central disc herniation with no significant effect.  Central spinal canal and neural foramina appear patent. C4-5, mild bulging of disc seen with no signif. effect. Central spinal canal and neural foramina appear patent.  C5-6, small broad based left paracentral osteocartilaginous bar. This has resulted in mild effacement of the anterior CSF space though no significant cord deformity or signal abnormalilty. Neural foramina are mildly narrowed secondary to early degenerative changes of the uncovertebral joints and facets.  Incident note made of a small approx 3 mm left sided perineural cyst. C6-7, small broade based posterior osteocartilaginous bar.  No significant central spinal canal narrowing, neural foramina appear patent bilaterally.  C7-T11, no signif. central spinal canal or neural foraminal narrowing seen.  Would appreciate a bit of an interpretation.  Am a little concerned about the cyst as well and whether it will grow?  I have at least been referred to see a neurosurgeon but will probably take some time to get in to see him.  Thanks a million

I understand the pain you are in.
I am Posting a Copy of what I just sent for another Q.(as I have problem typing).
My first car crash left me with injuries like yours - I had a cervical fusion C3-C6 which failed - screws migrated into C2 above, making it all unstable ...BUT I did not find this out until after a 2nd car crash many years later - requiring a C5-C7 fusion and laminectomy ... or I most likely would be a quadriplegic by now.
Overall though I have now spinal cord damage that affects my arms, legs, face - with burning searing pain .. as well as allodynia (hypersensitivity on arms, lower & outer upper legs, face - all continually burn, with even front half of tongue burning & dry - hard to talk as saliva dies up)
This has been happening over many years now - I am a therapist myself who has helped many others deal with chronic pain, as well as cancer, trauma etc.
I have found one has to keep ASKING and looking ... there ARE improvements in care .
But usually ONE type of treatment is not sufficient. Everyone is individual - so get help from a Pain Clinic that has Hypnotherapy, Acupuncture, massage, water therapy, laser etc....and also look at Complementary approaches such as Meditation and Guided Imagery to assist your own body and mind to heal.
Try places like downloads from Petrea King on www.questforlife.com .. and Resonanz.com for MP3s/CDs by Psychologist/Therapist Rick Collingwood - for Hypnotherapy to help be more "PainFree" and "MindBody Healing".
Otherwise check quitandb.com and www.keen.com/contact4help
