vomiting

by Bouncer5, Oct 25, 2007 10:32AM
My toy poodle has been vomiting since last saturday. It was very sudden he hasn't had any problems before this. He is eating science diet puppy food. He is only 5 months old. He can eat his food in the morning and then eat again in the evening with no problem and about 5 hours later is vomits. Not a lot but some. The vet told us to give him some peptobismol before we fed him and that made the vomiting worse. He doesn't have diarrea or anything like that just the vomiting. He hasn't slowed down any he's active in playing he eats well and drinks good. I am at a loss as to what is wrong. But i'm afraid something serious may be wrong.

Maybe try feeding some moist food.  Could be the little guy is having trouble digesting the hard food.

Whenever vomiting crops up in my dogs, I feed plain white rice in small amounts until it settles down.  I also add a Pepcid tablet about 10 or 15 minutes before feeding on advice from my vet - at least it's not as messy as Pepto!

Since he seems fine otherwise, meaning he's still active and still having an appetite, it almost sounds like a mechanical problem with the sphincter between the esophogus and stomach.  The same kind of problem that can result in reflux in humans.  Does he barf when he's been laying around the house, or after playing and exercising?  That might be a clue to help your vet with a diagnosis.
