Permanent Eye Booger

I have a bizarre growth on the inner corner of my eye that sort of looks like a blackhead (its not). Its been there for months, is hard (solid) and painless. Basically, it looks like I'm walking around with an eye booger constantly and I'm getting quite annoyed with it. Is it harmless, or should I have it checked out? More importantly, is there anything I can do to get rid of it? I don't think my insurance would cover the removal of it if it turns out to be nothing more than a vanity issue. I have had problem with contacts/dry eyes in the past and have had plugs after laser surgery, but I don't think this is related. I haven't found any info on the net about it - any suggestions?
