Prolong high TSH and AB

by fallingstar27, Oct 26, 2007 10:22AM
I have been hypothyroid since I was 17 and I am now 27.  I do not think they have ever made my dose completely right and it has steadily been rising over the years.  For the past 6 months I have been on 200 mcg of Synthroid and I went to see an endocrinologist.  My TSH was 13.31 and my Thryoid Perioxidaise (?) AB was 89.4.  He increased my dose again, but I wonder if my body is damaging itself with this prolonged high TSH, I don't think I've ever been close to what it needs to be.

Also I feel tired, confused, muddle headed, and within seconds of sleep sometimes, and others I feel fine.  Is there anything I can do to help prevent this.  My new dose of synthyroid is 250mcg and I will take 125 in the morning and 125 at night.  the doctor has scheduled me for a thyroid ultrasound, but he is not very forthcoming about what any of this means...Any advice or help would be great

Longstanding hypothyroidism (as reflected by the high TSH) can be stressful to the body.  The important thing will be to find out why your dose requirements are so high.  The ultrasound will help identify the size of the thyroid and the presence of nodules, but will not help figure out the dosing.

Would consider checking for celiac sprue antibodies as there could be an absorption problem.  Alos, make sure you are not taking iron or calcium along with the synthroid and take a list of all meds and supplements to your endo to review.
