Doctor says there is no pain w/ MS

by linda010469, Oct 26, 2007 12:22PM
Well, I had the blood work and MRI all came back ok. BUT, my doctor thinks the next step should be to see a Neur. I am planning on that in Nov. What bothers me is my doctor that I think is really great and really got this going w/ me fast, keeps telling me that what I am experiencing is not MS, because you don't have pain w/ MS. I had ALOT of pain in my legs mostly for a few weeks, and other people on here talk about their pain, so why would my doc. say that?? Is pain not a COMMON problem?

I'm no doctor, but I just read that 60% of MS patients experience pain as a symptom. Sounds like your doctor, who I'm sure is great, just isn't up-to-date on MS symptoms.

I think your DR. fell and bumped his HEAD !!!!!! I have MS and I do have pain,I have muscle pain from the spasms,I have pain behind my left eye from optical neuritis and I have nerve pain from this disease. Not everyone experiences every symptom nor do they have pain.

Your Dr was good on getting the ball rolling and getting the MRI's done, but a neuro is best when dealing with neurological disorders.

I think he bumped his head too!!!! He's a great guy, but I don't think he is up-to-date w/ MS, I am seeing the Neuro. on the 13 of Nov. Will be looking forward to what she has to say. Wish the doc. could feel what I feel today, pains that come and go all over my legs?? Has anyone had they're hands shake but right before one shakes you can feel it coming on?? That was happening to me yesterday, I would just get this funny feeling in my hand and then I would look down at it and it would start to shake just a little bit. Linda

Sorry I just have to chime in....I'd like to bump that doctor in the head.....No pain with MS?  My life consists of chronic, sometimes unbearable pain.  I am one of those people with MS that would love to live ONE DAY without pain.  You can tell that doctor that for me.  Sorry Linda, certainly not "chimming in" on you specifically.

When I hear ANY doctor say there is no pain with MS, my blood just boils. I think the percentage of people with MS that have pain, runs much higher than 60%.  It's undertreated and under reported....I think it's probably more around 90%.  I say that after being diagnosed for over 12 years now.  Talked to too many people with suspected MS and diagnosed MS...they are in PAIN.

Those that agree with me, prepare the BBQ pit.  There is another doctor to be "roasted."  Don't you think?

Medicine advances as we learn more but sometimes the advances don't get passed on to neurologists. At one time pain was not considered a part of MS. I, too, have been told that I couldn't have MS as pain is my most disturbing symptom. My current neurologist took one look at my MRI and said that I have definite MS. My advice is to find a good neurologist or MS Center. If you are in the Atlanta area, I have been pleased with the MS Center of Atlanta. Best of luck!

Yes.I  get spinal pain, don't know if its from the MS or the thoracic and lumbar radiculopathy, they probably feed off each other.

Radiculopathy is detected through a NCS/EMG and most DRs don't do the spine.

Severity of chronic pain and its relationship to quality of life in multiple sclerosis.

Mult Scler.  2005; 11(3):322-7 (ISSN: 1352-4585)

Department of Neurology, University of Toronto, Ontario M5B 1W8, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: This study used reliable and validated instruments to compare pain severity in multiple sclerosis (MS) to that in other chronic painful conditions, and to examine relationships between chronic pain in MS and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). METHODS: Ninety-nine MS patients completed a self-administered survey comprised of the Medical Outcomes 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. RESULTS: Pain severity was not different between MS patients with pain and rheumatoid arthritis (P = 0.77) or osteoarthritis
