Artificial UV-B sources for Vitamin-D synthesis

by steve80, Oct 26, 2007 03:49PM
Hello there,
finally I found a dermatology forum that has actual doctors :-)

Since I do not eat animal products and live in middle/north Europe, I think in the colder seasons I might have not enough vitamin-D, such risking degrading of bone health. (And, from what I've read, even moderate consumption of animal products would not guarantee sufficient vit-D supply in winter)
I'm not a fan of too much pill popping (take B-12 though, but we don't wanna exaggerate :D ), and I have read summaries of recent studies, proving that artificial UV-B light sources even with low amount of UVB strongly improved vitamin-D defiencies in test persons.

I do not consider visiting solariums... I do not want to get darker skin or pay so much money.
Insetad, after also reading articles about how UV light is important for properly getting awake in the morning etc., I had this idea:

Why not installing a Fullspectrum + UVB lamp in my living room (optionally switchable, next to the normal lamps) which are available for terrariums, to improve health of pet reptiles ?

I have seen different kinds of lamps, from 13 to 150 Watts, from 2% UVB to 10% UVB, and some lamps with UVB + UVA, the remaining % being full spectrum visible light.

Now my question is, are such lamps safe to use, using low UV output maybe even the whole day, or, switched on for a few hours each day? What lamps would be best to use, for what exposure times. I do not favor the solarium wise thing, like 15 min full power a day ;-) If it was safe, I would favor a slight doses for the whole day, if that makes sense physiologically. But I do not even know if 2% at say 20 Watts has any effect at all for humans, although they say even for the 13W 2% UVB that "plants will grow better".

(I'm into electronics and could build control electronics monitoring that i won't get too much exposure per day, if necessary)

So, what do you say?
Thanks in advance!
