Brachial Neuritis?Parsonage Turner Syndrome

by JorgeLG, Oct 27, 2007 11:08AM
About a 5 weeks ago I woke up with a pain in my upper back around my right trap.  It initially was a cramp like pain.  A few days later the pain went from cramp like to a pulled muscle pain.  Having pulled a back muscle before I didn't go to my doctor and decided to just ride it out.  After a few weeks, the pain persisted so I went to an outpatient clinic..  The attending doctor told me I had a myofascial strain.  He prescribed an anti-inflamatories and a muscle relaxer.

I work out several times a week, but hadn't worked out since I woke up with the pain.  Since the pain in my back was subsiding, I decided to go back to the gym last week.  Upon lifting weights, I noticed I had lost a considerable amount of strenght.  I thought nothing of it because it had been a couple of weeks since I had last worked out.  I continued working out and lowered the weight to something I could handle.  It's been two week since I went back to the gym and now I noticed that my right tricep and right pectoral muscle have experienced atrophy.  Also I can't seem to relly flex those muscles.  They seem extemely soft compared to my other muscles.  If I sqeeze my right tricep or right pectoral muscle it hurts really bad.  It is as if I am sqeezeing 100 times harder than I really am.  For the most part the pain in my upper back is gone, but with certain movements I experience a little discomfort.  I also feel some discomfort if I try to look all the way up or straight down.

I visted my family doctor and she thinks that I injured my back and that the muscle is so inflamed that it is pressing up againt nerves.  I am more inclined to believe that my condition is due to Parsonage Turner Syndrome.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks
