hormone therapy and hair loss

by trixie9, Oct 27, 2007 03:01PM
I took HRT in the form of Femhrt about 6 months ago.  After 2 months, my hair started falling out like crazy.  Will this hair return. I see tiny little hairs coming up, but don't know if this means anything.  My hair is extremely thin on top and can see my scalp through.  Please help.  Is this permanet and when should this get better. I stopped the Femhrt immediately upon the noticing of the hair loss, about 3 months ago.

Did you look on the insert from Femhrt to see if this is a known side effect?  My thought is that it should increase your hair growth rather than deplete it, because that is what happens during pregnancy.  (If so, a possibility is that whatever you took the HRT to solve was causing the hair loss, instead of the Femhrt causing the hair loss.)  I would look on Femhrt's website and see if hair loss is named as a side effect, and if so, look for an 800 number to call and talk to someone about it.  They should be able to tell you what to expect in terms of it growing back, once you are off the HRT.

Yes, the insert said it was listed as one of the side effects.  I did call the number and the lady said this was reported by people and the hair should come back.  I also have seen a derm who said the same thing, but it is so extreme, I am scared to death.  I am to see the derm again in about a month.  I am positive that the hormone therapy did cause it because this is the second time this has happened.  The first time I used Climara Pro Patch, after 2 months hair started coming out, but then went I stopped it, it seemed to resolve  almost immediately.  Waited several months and symptoms were so bad with menopause, called my doctor and she said she would give me something that maybe would not cause so many side effects.  That is when I was started on the Femhrt.  After about 2 months, the hair started falling out again, but did not stop when I discontinued the medication.  I really think this medication is bad, especially if it can cause such extreme side effects.
