when should i start my period?

I just had my baby july 31st and had 4 weeks of bleeding...now on october 23rd i started spotting, just barely for a couple days, im wondering if this was actually considered a period? i need to know because i really need to start my birth control pills but need to wait for a real period to do so!! do i start the pills or was the spotting not really a period???
