There are definitely things that can be done. Are you seeing a therapist? Therapy can help you work your way through your depressed state. While medication may help alleviate depression, you should not be relying solely on them to make you feel better. Depression can come and go, but learned skills to help cope with it will help you tremendously. Also, while it's hard to keep this in mind at depressed times, we change as we age, learn, and grow. The experience of dealing with depression can help you to cope with it. Other stress relievers such as exercise and meditation can help, but if you aren't seeing a therapist, you should. And if you are seeing a therapist, and they aren't helping, don't be afraid to switch. The way you relate to your therapist can have a huge effect on your therapy.
As for brownie_4_ever, what you are describing sounds like it goes beyond depression. You may also be bi-polar and if that is the case, you may need a new prescription. In the mean time, when suicidal thoughts begin, try calling a hotline or family member. If the thoughts are overwhelming, please, please go to the hospital.
