Yes thyroid disease can mimic bi polar. Have her go to the doctor and get her blood tests done. then go from there. It would be best to go see an endocrinologist that specializes in thyroids.Let me know how she does.

Also, have her talk to people on this forum so she knows she is not alone with thyroid disease. It's helped me tremendously.

Thyroid problems can mimic or exaserbate many mental disorders.  Just ask any of us who have been through "hypo-hell" how it can cause depression!   My sister and daughter were both diagnosed bipolar and have both had dramatic mood stabalization since their thyroid surgeries and meds.   Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT advising thyroid surgery for bipolar - ours was for thyroid cancer.  It was just an interesting side effect of balancing out the thyroid levels in both of them.
(Sister was mostly depressive bipolar, daughter was fast-cycling, mostly manic)

Just my experience

Both hyper and hypo exacerbated my depression with bipolar.  Had to adjust my meds to go with it.  But now that my thyroid levels are stabilized have decreased my anti-depressants again.  I am a fast-cycling bipolar with emphasis on depression.  Maybe once they get her thyroid stabilized she won't have any bipolar symptoms.  Hopefully.
