Grave's 10 years and counting...

by splashjc, Nov 02, 2007 09:04PM
I was diagnosed with Grave's 10 years ago, and have been taking PTU off and on in low doses all this time. I had an ultra sound 3 years ago that said a node was 7 cm, and that both left and right (right is the grotesquely larger side) had heterogeneous echo, and that the ithsmus was also prominent. The disease I suppose is relatively manageable, but I have noticed lately that I can see my thyroid in the right side of my neck, and very recently I have been having bouts of hoarseness.
Should they have done a biopsy?
Should I be on PTU for over 10 years?
Am I a candidate for surgery?

Depending what other test showed if biopsy would be necessary.

My personal opinion is no, could cause some sreious damage.  Although doctor should be managing and checking for these issues.  PTU only bring levels back into normal, hopefully, but as long as you have active thyroid which you do taking PTU, antibodies can still attack your thyroid causing havoc with symptoms.

Surgery for Graves' is your choice with doctor approval.  However surgery is not the 100% solution. You will still have some residue thyroid tissue lefy behind for the antibodies to still attack and there is a possibility thyroid can grow back. If you are meaning surgery for nodules, that could be a possibility depending what the condition the nodules are in.

Good luck
