Prostrate radiation & side its effects

by gabby7, Feb 03, 2007 12:00AM
I suffer with sever left ventrical trachardia from scar tissue from a heart attack some 20 yrs. ago. The fast heart rythum is controled with bata blockers and a defribulator. I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer two years ago with a psa of 4.4. I received a 10 month hormone treatment of Lupron to shrink the prostrate and kill the cancer. After the treatment my psa was 0.2 and the prostrate was shunk. Six months later the psa was 4.2. I am to receive external radiation now but am concerned that one of the side effects, diarrhea, will interfer with the absorption of my bata blockers to control my heart rythum. The beta blockers are absorbed in the lower intestine and with diarrhea they are not effective. I have had trouble with fast heart rythum from diarrhea in the past. My question is that my being 71 yrs. of age, if I should gamble and take the wait and see option.
I was told by my Dr. that the cancer is of the slow growing type. Thanks for listening.

In 1992 at age 60 I had my prostate removed: psa 7.  6 months later I had 32 external radiation treatments with no apparent side effects.  However, 10 years later the Dr said the radiation had ruined my bladder, making it like leather.  I had leakage.  Had to wear pads.  In 3 more years the leakage was 100%.  10 pads per day.  In january 2007 I had a AMS 800 implant which will be activated in 3 more days.  Hopefully that will stop the leakage.

Why is your doctor not putting you back on hormone therapy for a longer amount of time?  Or switching to a different kind of hormone med?  Has your doctor considered "Cyberknife?"  It is one trade name for a specific kind of radiation that is "pin-point" controlled designed to affect as little of the surrounding tissue as possible.  I think there might be fewer side affects as well.

Your doctor should know whether or not the treatment will affect the absorption of your regular medicines. At 71, many might tell you to "watch and wait."  I think before proceeding with any treatment, in light of your other medical conditions, you owe it to yourself to ask your urologist a few more "hard" questions about the treatment he/she is prescribing and other possible treatments such as the ones I have suggested.

Wishing you the best.
