by msdean, Nov 10, 2007 10:00AM
me and my husband has been together for a yr and a half and during this time ive been to the gyn twice. the first time i went y test came back good. the ssecond time i went thinjgs were good again. then we went to a local clinic and they told me that i had chlymidia. now my question is the woman said men were the carriers for this std but it not be detected previously in my pap smears? and why id it show through a blood test? should i be wondering if my husband is cheating and contracted it from the other person?

well symptoms for chlamydia are sometimes not none at all in women (and men).  When you get a pap smear, that does not test for STI's unless automatically especially when there are no symptoms, unless you ask to get tested for STI's.  Good thing you can get treatment for it!  Your husband may not even know he's got it and has been carrying it for years, so since you are infected, please ask him to get tested.

ok...how should i start this?? ...hmmm....I went to a anual check up at  the clinic and the tests came back positive for chlymidia. To my shock, I must  say because I had only one sexual parter but he waz very open with me in regards to his past sexual relatioship. I got the treatment at the time but he wasnt able to so months we "slip up" and have sex unprotected. We both got treatment this time around but my question its about fertility. I am fully aware that if u live with the STD for a long period of time it may cause infertiliy but the question is  for how long is considered long for that to happen?? Is it the same for men??? I want to have children and we been trying  for over  a yr without a succesful result. Is it chlymidia to blame??? I know that it wasnt more then a year that I carried the std but my boyfriend is not sure because he  wasnt aware.

It's usually when you get symptoms of PID from Chlamydia that you have complications with fertility.  You didn't mention having PID so I'd assume you are probably OK.

Yes it can cause infertility in men as well, but less commonly.

I didn't even know it could be caught by bloodwork. I recently found out that I have chlymidia, i am in the middle of treating it, and my bf will be treating it as well when he goes gets checked monday and i know for a fact that i didnt get it from him because he was a virgin when i met him. But when my doctor called me earlier and told me he wanted me to come in and go over my blood work, I was freaking out, because before then i had gotten an annual at Planned Parenthood, thats who tested and told me I had it. Well, for the last hour I have been freaking out because all I could think about was that I have aids or Hiv. But now that I know chlymidia can be found in blood work, I'm sure thats what he wants to talk to me about. I just want to thank you, even though i probly could have found out somewhere else :) It puts my mind at rest, until 4:30pm monday

And i think that even if you have unprotected sex with your husband, it doesnt have to be one time to get it i think, it could be a few times before you get it. I think. I'm not sure on it though.

Chlamydia blood tests are not relaible, since they don't tell you what chlamydia bacteria you had, and there are several, including one that causes pneumonia.  If you have a positive chlamydia blood test, you should follow up with a swab or urine test.

i will encourage that you get a pelvic sonogram done. ask your doctor to write you a referal. i just went through a similar situation. my ex infected me and i may have been carrying this for six months. now i have scarring on my left ovary. i have scheduled an MRI and will see exactly what is going on. get a pelvic sonogram to see how much damage has been done to your reproductive organs so you can address this if you intend on having children in the future.
take care my dear. i was super paranoid about STDs and required that my ex get tested. he came back with his HIV and nothing else. stupidly, i neglected the others by trusting too much. just take a lot of precaution and require that your partner get tested every six months. i am sorry i did not demand that he get an STD test and now i have to pay for it with my ovary.
you will be fine. take care hun.

I just want to add that scarring to an ovary can also be from cysts, which have nothing at all to do with an std.

all this chlymidia stuff creeps me out... i mean there is no guarantee that sumone wont give it to you... you can never really trust what sumone says anymore... in my opinion it is important to get tested annually if you and your partner are having sex frequently.... i aint no saint but i aint stupid either there is a difference...it feels good to me when i can say i have only had one sexual partner... these stds are no joke because now there are more of them that cant be treated like hiv/aids, hpv-ewwww, and herpes

SmartNSafe -

Your advice about testing is good, but please refrain from the "ewwww" comments.  We have people on this board who are living with HPV, and the other infections you list, and it helps no one when someone posts such a thing.

There is nothing "ewwww" about an std, other than what someone thinks it might be.  You don't "ewwww" strep throat, so why do that to an std?

And careful, because 80% will have hpv in their lifetime, and you might too.

From what I've been reading in another website, men always seem to get obvious symptoms from gono or chlamydia.  It may not be right away but sooner or later they appear.

It sounds like he must have contracted it very recently.

Good Luck to both of you.
