Taking a newborn out

by TravsAimee, Nov 11, 2007 12:44PM
I am 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby who is due a couple of weeks before Christmas. I have recently started worrying about taking the baby out for Christmas events after she is born. We have a large family and we get together every year. Is it safe to have the baby in an environment where she will be getting passed around by numerous family members? This worries me especially because it is around flu season. I've heard that a newborn should not be exposed to large groups of people until after 6 weeks.

Hello,

You may want to talk to your pediatrician about this matter.  That said, your infant will be partly protected from many pathogens by your immune cells that have been passed to the fetus through the placenta.  This will help the infant for a short period of time.  However, I would just be sensible.  Keep the baby away from individuals who are sick.

Best regards,

You should be fine taking your newborn out. I took mine out in February when she was born. Just make sure your precious little baby is dressed warm and you keep the wind off by covering him or her up with blankets. One of the best ways to carry from the car to the warmth of a house or building is in the car seat with a blanket on them and one over the car seat to keep the wind off.  You should be fine that way. I didnt have any problems with either of my girls in the cold like this. Hope this helps.
