Phlegm In Throat Causes Choking Reaction

by joe4x2, Nov 13, 2007 11:36PM
Hi all. My dad has a problem that is starting to scare me. Every so often (2-4) times a month he will cough up a very thick/stringy clump of phlegm and it gets caught in his throat which causes him to choke on it. During this process he cannot breathe and struggles to take in air. A few of these attacks have been quite scary but after 10-20 seconds he can regain his normal breathing and cough it up. Burping sometimes clears a passage for air. He has had problems with acid reflux and takes Tums regularly. Also, he does not have problems breathing other than these attacks. Can anyone shed any light on this? We have been to his ENT who was no help. Thank you.
