Post surgical MRSA

My friend just had reconstructive nose surgery last week - They had to cut some rib & some ear cartalege to rebuild her nose from two previous REALLY BAD surgeries.  She was in an after-care facility for three days following surgery, went home on last Friday - and had a f/u visit on Monday - and the Dr. ambulanced her to the hospital due to a severe staph infection.  She's extremely sick - much pain & her nose is like the size of a tangerine.  Today the want to take her in for a CAT scan.  MY QUESTION IS WHY DOES SHE NEED TO GET A CAT SCAN?  What are they looking for?  Is there a chance that the infection can spread to her brain?  I am VERY CONCERNED and although she is hospitalized (at Cedars in BH, CA) is there a real chance that she could die from this?  PLEASE RESPOND AS HER WHOLE FAMILY IS DEEPLY UPSET.

I presume the CAT scan is to identify any pockets indicative of an abscess that may be present about the nasal area.  This might help in draining and treating the infection.  However, her physician should be forthright to her about why this test is necessary and what his/her thinking is regarding the treatment of this complication.
